Watercooling Project

The main goal of this project was to recycle an existing AT web server case into an easily upgradeable water cooled platform which would enable me to extract every last MHz from my PC by using whatever cooling method I deemed necessary. My machine gets upgraded, broken, and soldered on quite a bit, so I wanted the compartment where the motherboard and PCI cards were to be free from obstructions for easy maintenance, as well as good air flow.
The case came into my possession as part of a bulk purchase from Emily's hospital when they changed out their network I endeavored to recycle parts from other machines I had around whenever possible in order to keep costs down. The fans cooling the radiator were salvaged from a Compaq 6400 Server and feature both a tachometer sensor and a locked rotor sensor . The radiator, pump, and waterblock were bought used from an AMDMB.com member.
A custom fan speed control circuit is being fabricated using an LM350 adjustable voltage regulator circuit. Also in the works is cold cathode lighting, a lexan window, and an automotive grade finish on the exterior case. Future upgrades will include a thermoelectric water chiller, and a larger capacity reservoir.
The system allows my processor to reach 2.0 GHz or the equivalent of an Athlon XP2400+ with a 166MHz FSB. Temperatures remain at approximately 9°C above room ambient when idle, and 11°C above ambient fully loaded. The system has plenty of capacity for any future additions such as Peltiers, water chillers, etc...
